Ok old guys I have a questin for ya. When I had my Dick special I used a load called an FBI load for 38spl. It shot a 158 grain SWJHP all lead. I have not been able to find that load recently. Ol yeah it was a 38 special load maybe a + P all lead. Anyone know who still markets these? Any info on the ballistics on these rounds? Never poped someone with it but it was was hell on whistle pigs and cats. Wouldn't mind having a couple boxes if someone has a source.

Jim,
Buffalo Bore has it, but it is not cheap, about a buck a round. There load, 158gr swjhp does over 1000fps out of a 2".
ETA: They claim around 14" penetration.
Jim,in the old days I shot a lot of that and spent many a joyous hour cleaning cylinder faces.:D Federal,Winchester and Remington all loaded it.
The Remington bullets were a softer lead than the Win. or Fed.and gave better expansion. The Winchester is the only brand I've seen on the shelves lately, but like G said the Buffalo Bore may be the way to go with this load now.
I think they all still make it.

Good heavens those brings back memories.
It was the standard load for the Patrol back when I started.
I was carrying a Ruger Security Six, but they wouldn't let me use .357 in it.
Had to carry the "issue" ammo.

God, I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers carrying it. IF I recall correctly it was THE load out of the 2 inchers to use. I was shooting some 158SWC last night out of my bull barreled model 10 and got to thinking where's my holes!? Don't know if I need them at a buck a piece G.:D

Jim Winchester still shows a +p load in that form, its what i use in the belly guns.
First time I saw it in a standard loading Mr. Bryce refered to it as the Chicago Load same , same though
Only saw one man shot with it and that was a belly wound, he went tits up most ricky-tick

I don't have much recollection of the FBI load, but I do recall when we made the change from 158 gr lead to Super Vel.

G, we always called them FBI loads maybe it just was a regional thing. Your Super Vel comment sent me searching through my old ammo. This is a box of their 110 grn flame throwers. I capped off a couple at some members of an Outlaw motorcycle gang one night out of my 2 " Detective special.
We had about 10 members hit the dirt one confessed to consuming in a motor vehicle earlier in the day.:D One ask me if we all carried 44 magnums:p Ah the good ole days.

Jim,
Those must be some of the later ones. As I remember the early ones were brass cases.

I don't remember when I bought these G. I got rid of my Dick special around 76 or so and that was the last 38 I carried. Probably early mid 70's. I do remember the brass cases now that you mention it.

AH the rocket loads!!!! Used to carry a Diamond Back with a 4" barrel stoked with the early Super-Vel 110jhp's, up until the day i shot a gallon paint can,, the even at 15 feet the can wasn't ruptured and the smear on the can itself was all lead...Changed back the very day to the old "highway" loads
OLD FARTS OLD FARTS OLD FARTS!
Sorry guys, I couldn't resist.
When I started I was issued a 5" Model 10, a garrison belt, a 6-round belt slide ammo carrier, and an OLD JayPee holster. We could CARRY anything we wanted as long as we bought it (8-page approved weapons list).
But...Federal 125 +P jhps were issue.
I was the last of the wheelgun trainees I guess back in 1987...but I qualified with my Commander while still in the academy.
When I went to the dark side, and became a fed, we were issued 3" Model 13 with the load you speak of. 155gr +P lswchp's, but could carry magnum ammo as long as it was Federal 110gr jhp.
That lasted two years, then we were handed boxes with Glock 17's in them.
I do remember my Uncles Joe and Dude's Smith Model 67 .38s with 148gr LRN ammo in their dump pouches and 12-round ammo carries!
My,how the times do change.:)

Hey DJ,
Vels weren't for paint cans they were for people. I never shot any paint cans with them but they did alright on humans for me.
Sean,
1987?? What a fish.
Don't want to start a light vs. heavy debate, but I can relate one case in ref to the 110 gr.38 Super vels.
My best friend was killed with his partners gun in 1972.The shooter threw the gun down and ran out of the house. The "old man" of the family(a bad bunch) picked up the Mod.19 and and pointed it at the partner who had been beaten down with log chain and shot thru the hand.He told his other son"I'm gonna shoot this one again."
Doug was down with his back against the wall but had enought fight left to draw his Mod.10 which had a staggered load of 158gr. RNL and 110 gr. Super Vels that I had given him. He shot the old man,who weighed 400 lbs and was not fat. The bullet entered his back just above the right kdney, travelled upward and barely broke the skin on the top of the right shoulder in it's effort to exit. The old man fell straight backward and when he hit the floor every picture, vase, etc on the walls fell to the floor from his impact.
It was definetely a case of "dead before he hit the grouind."
This goes along with what I experienced and saw over the years in shootings and autopsies about bullet behavior. Each case is different and we have enough info for a real good educated guess, but there's no accurate way to predict the path a bullet will take once it enters the body.that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Doug's action saved his partner's life.Unfortunately he himself could not be saved. In this case the little 38 Super Vel did the job and did it well.
The case can be found in the FBI Officers Killed Summary for 1972.

I carry Remington 158gr swcjhp in my model 60 for years now Im not an old timer but i think its an excellent load
On the "FBI" loads you carry the Remington is probably the best as the lead used is softer than the Federal or Winchester loads, and they tend to expand a little better.
