My photos do no justice to the finish and blueing on this revolver!

I'm hurt bad! That's the only gun I'm presently looking for,for myself.
I still consider that the king of fighting revolvers and that is a beautiful example.

A very nice piece.
It looks very similar to my 27 with the exception of the jeweled hammer and trigger I had done on mine.

I just recently had the opportunity to shoot a 3.5 inch model 27 Doc. Very accurate out to 100 yrds:D

The prices for these when you can find one for sale anywhere have skyrocketed. The 3.5" is on my very short list as well. ;)

Very nice piece pistola, I'll take first in line if you are ever willing to sell it. edited------I found one NIB, see below, :D

They just feel"balanced" in my hand.Heavy, and will handle the hot loads well.I bought a Mod 28, 6 inch a few weeks ago from my friend Wayne Mobbs. It has been hard chromed by Ford's and is really slick, but if I find a 3.5 in. 27 that's right,it may be trade fodder.:D
Had a nickeled one in my youth and I still kick myself for letting that one go,but we've all done it I guess.

I felt like a blind hog in an oak forest yesterday! Not only did I find the S&W,but also a sweet 6" Colt Officers Model 38 !

What a sweet pistol.
I don't know why, but "tactical" crap just doesn't cut it.
Now I find myself once again drawn to the elegance of blued metal and well cared for wood.
Back when a handgun was a work of art as well as a tool, not some moulded piece of plastic.
Must be Alzhiemers...

I offered him somewhat less than he was asking including shipping and he took it G.:D

Still a hefty sum but I wanted one:rolleyes: , I'll just have to sell off a few of the 28's I have and it won't hurt so much.

I trust it will become a shooter and not a safe queen.

Brownie
11-06-2007, 03:42 PM
This one will be a safe queen, but I'll find another used one to shoot in the future G

The 27-2 was made from 61 to 82, so until I determine it's age by serial number, it can't be any younger than 25 yrs old and still NIB :D

I'm not sure, but the early ones may start with an S number [ like the early K22's ] and mine will probably start with an N number, later in the run. I base that on the grips, not having the early diamond magnas on the one I snagged unlike pistolas.

May I suggest sambar stag or real aged ivory and a grip adaptor?
When I find the one I want that's how I'll dress it.Old school. These guns are worth the expense of those additions,IMO.

Congrats on the find,B. Mine will be a shooter ,regardless.Could never resist. Life's too short.:)

Pistola, you see what this turned in to? You're gonna have to stop causing these problems!

Pistola, you see what this turned in to? You're gonna have to stop causing these problems!

Got that right Doc:eek: I'm grown tired of the mentioning and photos of the 27 3.5" and wanting one. I stepped up the pace last night, put a WTB post on the S+W site and had a post give me the link to the one I decided to pick up.

Though it goes in the safe as a queen due to NIB status [ hard to find one like that over even finding one for sale to begin with ], I talked with Jim tonight and he suggested I take one of my 28's and have the barrel cut to 3.5, recrowned, then refinished as a shooter as it will be emminently cheaper to go that route than find another 27.

Best of all, I don't have to wait to find another 27 [ hard enough to find em, let alone wait to find em for sale ]. I was going to wait till one came in the shop one day, but after pistola put that one up, and I had just recently shot one, it was time to pull the trigger on the first one I could find.

Good idea on cutting one of the 28's down Jim. I'll be connecting with my gunsmith Nelson Ford in N Phoenix [ specializes in the S+W revos since 1980 ] this week on the project. I'll have it go through an action job till it's slicker than s**t and be able to get back into some 357 revo work which has been some time now. The 28 I have in mind for this project only stands me 200.00 right now, so the cost of the project will be a lot less than paying for another 27 in the end.

Not a bad idea on the 28. I've got my old issue 28 still and the chromed 6 inch I bought. I'd have to think about a cut down on mine for awhile,I've had it so long. Still,a nice idea from the Music man himself.

Brownie

I wouldn't cut on that old issue 28 Doc, you could cut the stories it could tell too short:D

The 28 thats going to go through the process has no value to me either way, but that may change when it morphs into a 3.5 inch fire breathing dragon;)

Yeah,I don't think I could whittle on this one. It handles pretty good just like it is,and we understand each other.:)

Glad to get you guys stirred up (lol). I wasn't looking for anything like this,but...I knew it was a Big Ol Gooden! Brownie, that's a real nice 27-2 you found, presentation case and everything in that condition is hard to find. Mine is an S prefix,S 798xx.Early 1950's I believe. Will have to get a letter to be sure. I'm kinda anxious to bust a few caps with mine!;)

pistola,

Last night I went out and searched the S+W forum for 27 information. The pre 27 with S prefix in 3.5 [ the N frame 357 ] is the one to own if you can find one.

Your S prefix pre 27 puts it at a premium to those who want one [ a 27 ] in their inventory. I believe mine will be an N prefix, a later model, probably in the 70's somewhere but I won't know until I check the serial number when it gets here sometime next week.

I've got a few Smiths from the 50's, those diamond grips from that era like yours are getting very expensive to find if you want/need them.

Your 27 doesn't show much wear if any at all. You scored nicely sir.

Well, the money orders went out this morning for that 27-2.

It didn't hurt one damned bit, I'm looking forward to getting it safely tucked away:D

I sold two pistols this morning [ 1911's ] that were just sitting and have a buyer on a third one presently. I was going to sell one or two of the 28's but after researching the S+W site last night, I think I'll hold them for another 5 years;)

Also confirmed with the seller that the 27-2 is an N prefix as I suspected.

Brownie, not to change the subject, but you said you sold 1911's. I"m sure you know that .45 ammo is priced like gold now? Jerry just got in some RA45T after being out for quite sometime and I'm ordering some from him. It is costly. Even hardball is ridiculous. I'm hoping my LE buddy will hook me up with some more sabres soon.
Nine's seem to be holding pretty well in price.May be all I can afford to shoot before long. I'm gong to start looking around for a deal on a press and dies and go back to "work" again.

I've quite a bit of 45 ball and HP stacked. Still have some 45's to play with, I'd never sell all the 1911's Doc:D

All ammo prices have gone up 4 times this year, and will continue to climb. Best advice I can give anyone is to stack it deep when you can find it.;)

Got the 27-2 into the safe yesterday.

By serial number it was made in 1975. It's 32 years old and doesn't have a turn line on the cylinder.:D

When I left Mass, I sold off a bunch of great collectables.

Jim's responsible for getting me interested in the Smith revos. If I had not bought that first K22 at his suggestion to learn the ariel shooting with pistols while he was out here, I'd have a lot more money in the bank right now.

What can I say, OCD finds its way into my life in various ways.
