Can a Glock 27 be "converted" into a Glock 26? If so, is all that is required a barrel and a mag change? Will it be as reliable as a G26?

A barrel and the correct mags will do it. You can also get a 357 Sig barrel and still use the same mags as for a 40. I didn't keep my 27 long enough to find out if it was as reliable as the 26's,but I see no reason why it wouldn't be,either in .40 or the 9mm conversion.
As far as the reliability after converting, the only thing that might cause concern would be the extractor.Others that have done it have had no complaints tho,so even that should be okay.
I'd put a few hundred or so thru it fast and hard just to be sure, if it were mine.

A friend of mine in Tucson has converted a 23 from 40 to 9, and a 27 to 9, and claims no problems in hundreds of rounds...so, heck, try it out and give us a rundown.

Steve, my Glock Armorer's manual shows different extractors for the 9mm and .40cal pistols. I expect that the smaller diameter case is not getting much contact with the extractor sized for the .40/.357 case. This may be acceptable on a range, but I would not do it with a pistol intended for "serious social situations".
The Glock part is only $10, according to my '04 book. Simple part swap.
Only question is how old is the mod 27. Those with a serial prefix before -BMY- , will have a 90* breechface cut, the later ones have a 15* angle.
(Also, the early 9mm has a parallel hook surface, the 40 and later 9mm uses a 5 degree undercut to help the brass slide under it.)

I actually show three for the 9mm:
#SP00098 old style (90/0*)
#SP01889 9mm, .380 (15/5*)
#SP01895 9mm, .380 w/loaded chamber indicator (should be latest type)
Not positive, but last two should be identical working surfaces, just last one has more metal that protrudes beyond slide when a round is under it.

I have a conversion barrel for the G22 and G35.

The problem most people encounter is the standard Glock 9mm barrel is narrower at the breach end than the .40 barrel but will fit in the .40 slide. The .40 barrel won't fit into a 9mm slide, so you need an aftermarket conversion barrel for a reliable conversion to be reliable and fit correctly. When I did mine the only problem I had was 1 failure to eject in a case of 9mm. I put in the 9 mm ejector and it ran flawlessly with 9mm or .40 sw (with the right barrel of course). There have not been any extraction problems at all with the .40 extractor.

The .357 and .40 s/w barrels are interchangable and have the same external dementions, use the same extractors and ejectors.

Mags do need to be ammo specific for safety if no other reason.

For me changing just the ejector to the 9mm part makes changing back and forth between 9 and .40 as easy as a barrel swap and grab the right mags and Glock chow. The 9mm is quite a bit less spendy and has paid for the conversion barrel several times over.

Edited to add:

I should say even though my set up has proven to be completly reliable with both calibers I do only carry .40 for SD. I just like the extra punch!

I have recently purchased a Storm Lake 357 sig conversion barrel for my G27 and like it. The SS finish looks great compared to the rest of the black color on the gun! I use my same G27 mags with no feeding problems at all.

I've reloaded for it and it shoots cast lead bullets just as nice as copper ones! :D

Steve,
I have been amazed by how reliable and accurate my G31 and G33 have been with the 9mm conversion barrels with 9mm magazines.

I bought my first 9mm conversion barrel (Olympic Arms)for my G31 in 2000 and I have put well over 10k through it with only two malfunctions due to loading 9mm in a G31 magazine instead of G17 magazines. Brownie used this gun with the conversion barrel installed during the Philly class without a single malfunction.

In 2004, I bought a 9mm conversion barrel (FAC) for my G33 and it need to have couple hundred rounds run through it to break it in. Other then with frangible ammunition, this gun has been extremely reliable with very few malfunctions as a matter of fact the G33 with the 9mm barrel installed has had the same malfunction rate as my G26.
