View Full Version : CAR Speed

One thing that is apparent with CAR / IPD is the speed at which it allows you to shoot due to the near elimination of felt recoil. I shoot often, and prior to shooting CAR I thought I had a pretty good handle on recoil control and follow up shots. Since basically completely switcing from mod iso to CAR, I've seen my spit times go from .18 down to .15 on a consistant basis and a bit faster on a good day. It may not sound like a big difference but if I find myself in the unfortunate circumstance of defending myself or my loved ones, you better believe Im going to want to be able to shoot as fast and as hard as possible.

Just curious, you guys that have been out with a shot timer, what are you seeing for shot splits from both the high and extended positions? How do your times compare with multiple shots from traditional shooting platforms?

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!:D

evan1293,

My splits have run from .18 to .24, averaging .21 usually with the Mod Iso I've used forever when on the timer.

I'm waiting to train with DW in the next year to get IPD/CAR and then work on that for a while, it will be interesting to see the difference, but like you have discovered, I think the splits will be lowered some.

Happy Thanksgiving to you as well

I'm a regular .20/.22 - I just can't seem to break that 6 shot/sec consistently. In time boys, in time.

However, yes, CAR does seem to help bring those splits down a little. The theory is that in the CAR Extended position the flexors and extensors that control the bending and straightening of the finger(s) are more relaxed than they would be in the standard Iso/Weaver positions. Partly because of the compressed nature of the stance itself, and partly due to the way the radial and ulnar bones come into alignment; two factors which also contribute greatly to the lessened recoil.

In most normal courses we usually end up with 25% or greater shooting 5 rounds/sec - and that's from people who were happy to make 4 shots only a few days earlier. Many of those who come in already able to shoot 5/sec walk out with sub .20 splits.

Now, all of that notwithstanding, there is much to be said with being familiar with your weapon's trigger reset...that's where much of your performance comes from. Which is why on the XD-40 that I use for training I still haven't sprung for a trigger job - it's all stock, and if you're not familiar with the XD line their stock trigger reset is far from short and crisp. Students will get discouraged or worse - become skeptical - if the only way we can perform is to have a finely tuned machine.

Dave,

I wouldn't fret too much about the difference between 5 and 6 per second. The receiving end is not going to notice the difference at that speed;)

It would be nice to get to .18 consistently though it's only 10% faster than .20 and 6 per second means splits of less than .17:D

Yeah...5 not 6 isn't anything to fuss over. I found that split speed increases as Im more relaxed shooting. If I try to get fast splits, forget about it, I'll not only be slow but may get a few trigger freezes once in a while. If I just concentrate on getting deep center hits I can usually shoot really fast.

"Slow is smooth, smooth is fast"

(And 5-7 rounds in under a second is fast, indeed....)

Thats some good speed Evan. I have never timed myself but I have emptied my Kimber in about one second. Brownie and I will be shooting together in a couple months maybe we will time a couple events. Keep up the good work:D
