A pre-lock S&W 629 4" revo on consignment caught my eye today. She had square wood target grips. The price is $599 firm. I haven't handled it yet. What should I look for in addition to lockup? Was cutting under the frontstrap an issue on the 29 models?
Is $599 a good deal for such a revo?
While this is not a photo of the one I saw, she looked like this one:http://san1.atlanta.gbhinc.com/GB/091865000/91865056/pix2433919000.jpg

Steve,
It would depend on when they started making the 629, at least back to March 97 from what I can find here quickly.
I don't like the trigger lock, if this one doesn't have it, it might not have MIM parts as well. It depends on the - number, visible on the frame when the cylinder is opened.
The price is fair value IMO if it's not MIM and prelock. If it has either, it's still a good price, they are still listed on the S+W site and are not cheap. If it's what you want, it's a nice gun in that barrel length.

The only two revo's that are on my list to collect to pass down to my son are a .41 magnum (S&W Model 57) and a .44 magnum (S&W Model 29 or 629). I don't think I have much need, use, or desire for a revo in .45acp. .45Colt... maybe someday, but not necessarily.
I understand that the S&W .460XLR (sp?) can also shoot .454 Casul, .45Colt, and .45acp... but I doubt I'm interested in one.

If they will be passed to your son, I'd spend the extra money and hunt down a pre-lock and pre MIM Smith, preferrably a snub in the 29 [ Smith collectors covet the snub revos ].
In the pre lock/pre MIM 57, good luck on an older one. They come up for sale occasionally on the Smith site but don't last long with the Smith collectors scooping them if in good shape as well as commanding premiums.

That's super advice.
The pre-lock, pre MIM stuff is really becoming one of the true blue chip wheelguns out there. The x29 more so due to the caliber and history.
$599 is a really fair price. Hang on to it for any period of time, shoot it or don't, and get your money back or make a profit. Or hand it down to lil' 2267 and he'll have a wheeler that induces a lot of drool 20 years from now.
I'd buy it.
