Lets see how the members stack up here----

I shoot right handed with a very slight dominant left eye [ no master eye ].

It serves well when I shoot with the left hand

I voted as "don't know" because I'm completely ambidextrous, right eye master, left eye dominant.

Left and Left. I can use the other side though just not as quick. When I had to shoot weak side I forced myself to use my right eye. I replied in another thread that I shot a bow for a while right handed. This helped me learn how to use my right eye. For those who have just started shooting or are now in position to shoot strong and weak hand, I would urge you to take the time to use both eyes. It's harder at first but pays off in spades in the end.

I'm confused, so what's new, I thought I knew what Dominant eye was, but what is a master eye?

I'm starting to question the private eye thing too!:D

Interesting question.
I am right handed and right eye dominate, but when I shoot left handed I use my left eye as it has a little better focus on the sights (presbyopia).

Ram,

Grab someone like your wife or friend and do this test.

Have them cover one of their eyes so you can focus on the other. Take a pen and hold it out at arms length, upward in your strong side fist like a big ass front sight. Focus on their uncovered eye and with both eyes open line the pen up with their eye.

They will be able to observe where your visual centerline is because the pen will be lined up on it. It could be directly lined up with your left or right eye [ which would be the master eye ] or it could be somewhere in between your eyes and your nose [ which would be the dominant eye ] . Have them tell you exactly what your visual centerline is. If the pen is on the nose and not ot one side or the other have equal dominance.

Once you know your centerline, with both eyes open, this is where you need to work from.

The above is a test to determine if you have a master eye, dominant eye or are eye neutral. The test comes directly from Jim Greggs book. His writings on eyes and finding where a person actually stands is the best I've ever read.

I'm shooting right handed and I have a left dominant to neutral eye [ the pen sits just off the nose toward my left eye ever so slightly [ it favors the nose and is not centered between the eye and nose [ which would be true dominant ] and the pen is not centered in the middle of the eye which would mean I had a master eye.

In short terms, "Dominant eye" refers to the eye which has the more dominant role in binocular vision (in other words, it has the greater visual acuity, so it provides the sharper image of the two eyes, so it is the eye which focuses first); "Master eye" is the eye with which one is most accustomed to looking (or pointing, as it were). Most people look with the dominant eye, so "dominant" and "master" are one and the same for them. A few folks (for instance, me), are more accustomed to looking with one eye, even though it is the weaker of the two.

Brownie or Steve had an article on the subject, as I understand it, which would be cool to post here.

When I run Gregg's test it shows that I am right handed and have a master right eye. In Greggs book he describes a master eye as an eye where the pupil in the contolling line of sight. I prefer the term visual centerline.

My right eye controls around 60% of my vision and my left controlls 40% (probably closer to 55% and 45%.) With this close dominance, I am also able to shoot just as well from either eye. I would speculate that this is why I see two very distinct images when I am threat focused.

As I stated before, when I started shooting I was cross dominate, but was able to change dominace by a lot of dry practice with hard focus on the frontsight.

I do about 20% of my training left handed and left eyed. Nice skill to own for shooting from behind cover or around corners.

I would highly recommend Greggs book also. The test that brownie posted above his his test and the best one I have ever seen.

Who else sees two images when they are threat focused? What did Gregg's test say you were (what is your visual centerline?)

Bownie, let me know when you are ready to trade books back. How did you like "Bullseyes Don't Shoot Back?"

Until I joined this site I was perfectly happy with Newtons explanation of Physics. Now I have read about quantum mechanics and am now studying Hawkins radiation of black holes. I still can't spell though:) . I'm sure though I am Left eye dominant. No matter, when I shoot at someone I usually hit that person and not the one standing to the right or left. I guess thats good right?

Performing the test as directed(did it yesterday after seeing SNB's post) indicates right master eye for me.Right handed, but always shoot left hand too. Probably about 10 to 15% of the time.

Hi Doc,

If your right eye is the master eye, you should remember that you'll do better left handed if you move that gun over to that master side.

I'm slightly left eye dominant and shoot right handed. Without having read Jim Greggs book, I had naturally just brought the gun to the slightly dominant side since 1972 when I really got heavily involved with pistols. Didn't realize that was what I was doing until reading Greggs book this year though.

With a true master eye, all the more reason to get the weapon to where that dominant eye can take over.

Good advice, and thanks. I'll experiment with that next range session on Wednesday. As I said in another post,it's good to find out after a hundred yaers which is the master eye!
