View Full Version : Can a dinosaur get "modern?"
I don't know. My son has just traded one of the Glock 30's I gave him for a H&K USP .40 that was owned by a local county detective for about eight months.
I'm not huge on the .40 caliber.I've owned three, two Glocks and a Beretta and ended up getting rid of them all for different reasons. I like the H&K tho,I like the controls. Cocked and locked like the 1911(sorta) or DA from the get go. Second strike capability,if that's important.
It seems to have a higher bore axis that I'm accutomed to with 1911's and the Glocks. Then again,I won't be the one using it,he will. Unless it grows on me. An H&K is all he's talked about since he was about 13. He'll be 22 tomorrow so I helped him out a little for the birthday.
Anyone have any experience with the USP's? Anything we should know about. These are new territory for me.

I've not had an HK USP come back with any complaints at the shop Doc.
We sell em, people seem to like them, and the general consensus being their one of the most reliable pistols out there to choose from.
But oh doesn't HK think their products are made of gold based on their pricing:rolleyes:
Now to the question of "Can a dinosaur get "modern?" I sure hope so Doc, I'm in that category myself :D
Thanks,Brownie. Yes,they do like their products a LOT. The cop who traded it for a Colt Commander .38 Super had it eight months. We had the new railed G30 about 2 years. Scott leaned over the counter and asked me what I paid them for it. I told him 476 out the door. He made out the trade ticket and showed it to me. He allowed 476 on the trade.:)
It had only been in the son's Forerunner and never in a holster except at the range. $200 difference on the H&K so I think we actually came out pretty good on this one .The G30 had absolutely no visible exterior wear on the finish. The only real loss was what I paid for the night sights I installed but the USP has them also.
I looked at prices on some new ones and about fainted.

The USP is a good weapon, and I've not heard any *real* (read: functional) complaints. It's heavy, though - you definitely know you're holding a nice piece of steel. Grips are a tad thick for my tastes, but that's personal preference. I like the controls on them as well, Doc.
They make good weapons, but both HK and the HK glee club seem to think that their poo doesn't stink like everyone else's.
Thanks,Dave.I gather the same thing about the "glee club.":D For us,it's just another pistol with possibilites, and a little different than what we're used to. Good to know the reliability is good too. That's numero uno.
I'll be interested in seeing what tricks we can make this one do.:)

QUICK!!!! Find that COP he should be warned about the cult of 38 super:D
Doc,YES WE CAN ADAPT!!!:D
Matter of fact I just talked to him a few minutes ago when he returned my call,DJ. He likes that commander, but said he would buy the USP back if had the money, just couldn't afford both.
He said he had a new Fobus holster for the USP that he would give the boy for it.
Yes,the CULT of the .38 SUPER! I almost sold my RIA Super build with the Bomars and the Elephant ivories a few days ago. I must have been temporarily insane.(that's happening more often lately.)
Fortunately,I regained my composure just in the nick of time.:)
I must keep repeating "Just say no,just say no....

Nah, not at all Doc, it's only a senior moment at our age:cool:
Yep, have more and more of those"moments"all the time.:D
Just got a reply back from JWK on ammo inquiry. He said he's low stock on everything right now,but the 40 is still pretty reasonable.
What floored me was the latest price on RA45T. 35 bucks on a 50 round box.! Glad I got a supply a while back and I'll sure be saving that stuff.
Hope George can get into the FBI car again.:) Looks like a lot of hardball shooting from here on.Even that ain't cheap anymore, huh? Kid may have made a real good trade with the price of .45 being what it is.
We finally got an opportunity to get in a short workout with the HK USP.
It's a solid performer. It took only a few rounds in the SA mode for me to adjust to the higher bore axis and start getting easy hits in rapid fire both two and one handed.
Son is very attached to it now. It's a large pistol, and not something I would go out looking for ,for myself but is a very nice gun and a good addition to the household battery,I think. I believe he made a good trade with the Glock 30. The 180 gr. 40 loads were very easy shooting in this gun. Good controls, all around. Deadly accurate in deliberate aimed fire.

Thanks for the report Doc.
We've got HK's new HK45 in the shop. Holds 10 rds, the grip is very nice, it's tempting to have one, but I just picked up a Sig Carry 45 on the cheap with 50 rounds through it.
Good score on the Sig,B. :)
Brownie, YOU are having waaay to much fun out there! :( Yes, I am jelous.
