Just back from a 4 day handgun course in NV, with a friend. We both shoot 1911 types. He brought a couple Govt models, I had Officer's models. Lots of malfs with the 5" guns, not quite as many with my little ones. His guns were stopping with a round against the ramp, or nose up into the roof of the chamber. I spent evenings cleaning and tweaking his guns.I finally had a chance to examine the rounds that had piled up at his firing point. All had bullet setback to some extent, some of it really extreme. The OAL was so short, that one observer asked if it was .45GAP! I'll measure some I saved, when I go over to get the lot number(s) of the ammo. This was CCI/Blazer Brass, 230gr. His problems disappeared when he switched to Blazer Alum the final day.
This setback might explain my lack of accuracy, as my targets looked like I was using buckshot. With the heavy springs in my guns, it seems that most times it would still shove that ammo into the chamber, but the resulting pressure changes plus the jump to the rifling would cause some erratic results, I think. Made for a frustrating class. Getting about 3 hours sleep per night, after working on the guns, sure didn't help!

Another student shooting a Springfield 1911 had an odd problem. One of the tritium vials in the rear sight came loose. He had already had it back to the factory for the same problem  I found that whatever glue they used must have been bad, since I found some of it still wet, and some dry and flaking. I used some red Loctite(271) on it, since he wanted it functional for the night shoot. I wasn't sure how well the blue(242) would hold in that application, so he said go for the red. I found out later that Black Max (by Loctite) was probably the glue used by Springfield.

All in all, my least pleasant shooting trip, for various reasons.

Sounds like a bad batch of Blazer got through QC on the bullet crimping process here.

4 days of training, even with problems is still a good week though:D

Congrats on attending a course and furthering your skills level.
