I've been invited to shoot Tuesday evenings after work with a small group. Smaller crowd, more shooting, less BS... a nice stress reliever.

Anyway, my goal is to practice self-defense / practical tactics rather than IPSC run-and-gun games etc. as most of the other shooters tend to do.

Last night I wanted to shoot my Colt Commander. Needless to say, I got plenty of remedial action practice. (Brownie -- I think all the problems were caused by the smaller Series 70 ejection port combined with a shokbuf that this gun had installed. I removed the shokbuf this morning. )

Anyway, here are four videos for your enjoyment pleasure. Feel free to rip my choice of gun if you must, or **** on the 1911 platform as I have my asbestos underwear on.

But I am very interested in any and all constructive comments / critiques about the various shooting techniques -- my draw, 1/2 hip, 3/4 hip, one handed while moving etc.

The targets were IPSC standard cardboard, and all my hits were As and Cs -- good solid torso hits. Most were either two A's or an A and a C.

Note: the files are between 5-8MB each in size. Winbloze Media Player may not properly play these files as MP kind of bloze, and may not have the proper video codecs. If you are using Winbloze and you have problems viewing the above videos, download the following portable edition of smplayer and unzip it. Then try running smplayer.exe in the smplayer-portable-0.6.9 folder.

I hope your not carrying that thing. I like you, I would hate to see you dead because your gun wouldn't shoot.

You,ve gone back to the old draw, with the hitch in it.

You didn't fall on your butt running.

Your shooting looked pretty good to me.

Your IA/RA drills felt a little clunky, and it seemed like you were struggling a little when it came time to rip those mags out. As an overall suggestion, you might consider getting mags with baseplates that you can get a grip on when needed so that doesn't happen.

I remember reading a while back that there was some general concern over the ejection port size in these mini-1911's, but I can't remember what the outcome was. I seem to remember that the size difference wasn't significant enough to cause FTE's, but I could be remembering that incorrectly. With that said, remember that 1911s are the most temperamental and unforgiving of all the platforms when it comes to grip and technique.

Nice movement, decent shooting, and good work getting that gun back up when it went down. Just smooth it out and it will look pretty! That's coming from a guy who's put in probably a couple thousand hours running IA drills, though...so take that with a grain of salt.

Steve can be a bit hard headed at times and has continued to revisit and drink from the poisoned well (1911) only to wonder why he is sick the next day several times now. Plus he has become lazy over the last year from carrying a Glock 19.

If I had to guess, he should own the company which manufactures those pairs of fire rated threat focused underoos by now as times we have gone this road!

He needs to stop adding gadgets to those damn things and if they don't work he needs to stop tinkering with them and send them to someone that knows what they doing!

Am I the only one that thought, for a "young" man with good co-ordination and reflexes, that the draw stunk? Irrespective of platform, etc.
